Planning a holiday in Norfolk? Looking for great tips on the best attractions, places to visit and things to see? This article suggests five great days out.

Norfolk is a county that boasts a beautiful coastline, many historic houses, castles and ruined abbeys, as well as rivers, marshes and, of course, the delights of the Norfolk Broads. There is so much to see and do. If you are planning a holiday in Norfolk this summer, or a short break in spring, try one or more of these great ideas for fabulous days out in Nelson's County.

Visit the Beautiful North Norfolk Coast

Norfolk boasts miles and miles of beautiful unspoiled beaches. From the pebbles and shingles of Cley, to the vast stretches of golden sand at Holkham and Wells, Norfolk beaches are clean, long and often surprisingly empty. Holkham beach is owned by the National Trust and is probably the best beach in Norfolk if you are looking for white sand, pine forests and an escape from the crowded beach at Wells. The road to the beach can be found just opposite the entrance to Holkham Hall. You have to pay to park, but then you can wander down a sandy boardwalk, over the dunes, to the vast sandy beach, which is never crowded, even at the height of the summer season. The North Norfolk Coastal Path runs right along the edge of the dunes, with great walks towards the bright lights and fish and chip shops of Wells.

Go Back in Time at the Norwich Castle Museum

You can't miss Norwich Castle. It stands high on a hill in the centre of the medieval city of Norwich, surrounded by its ancient moat, now a pleasant park and walkway. The old keep now contains the Norwich Castle Museum, a fascinating place to visit. From specialist collections of pottery and iron age tools, to medieval armour and the death masks of convicts executed at the castle gate, this museum has something for everyone. There are rooms full of stuffed birds, animals and insects, as well as a cafe and shop.

Sail Away on the Norfolk Broads

The Norfolk Broads are one of the very best places to visit in Norfolk. A unique stretch of wide open waterways, there is nothing quite like them anywhere in the country. Hire a boat at Wroxham and set off to explore the meres and broads, see herons, geese and many varieties of ducks close up. You can even sail right into the heart of the city of Norwich. Look out for rare Bitterns among the reed beds. The perfect way to spend a day, or a week!

Sample the Splendour of the Seventeenth Century at Blickling Hall

Blickling Hall is a fabulous stately home, now owned by the National Trust. Just outside the market town of Aylsham, a visit to Blickling Hall is a great way to spend the day. With beautiful formal gardens and sweeping parkland, a lake, woodland walks, towers and pyramids, there is plenty to see and do. As well as a cafe and garden shop, there is a local produce shop selling ice-creams.

Spot Rare Birds at Norfolk's Many Bird Reserves

The watery marshes of the Norfolk coast are home to thousands of migratory birds. Several famous bird reserves are well worth a visit, and the chance to spot rare visitors. Several reserves, including Titchwell Marsh, Strumpshaw Fen and Berney Marshes are owned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Birds to look out for are Marsh Harriers, Short-Eared Owls, many different types of waders, as well as Terns, Avocets, Godwits and Pink-Footed Geese.
